Football World Cup 2010 resources #2

Here’s a great idea for integrating literacy and art with a football theme.  It’s an easy way to do something creative even in a crowded classroom, and even if you only have A4 paper to work on.  You could have children working on calligrams of all the different participating countries, and display these for all the school to see.  Perhaps your class could also create the flag of each country (see previous football blog for all the flags) and display these next to each calligram.  You could have a big title at the top of your display: “GUESS THE COUNTRY!”  If you put this up in a public place in your school, I’m certain you will have crowds of children enjoying the work your class has produced.

    What’s a calligram?
According to Wikipedia, “A calligram is a poem, phrase, or word in which the typeface, calligraphy or handwriting is arranged in a way that creates a visual image.”  See more examples on Wikipedia.
